Pitti Palace became the symbol of the Medici’s power in the 16th century and in later centuries palace of the following reigning dynasties. Now it houses numerous museums of which the most famous is the Galleria Palatina with an incredible painting collection shown in the baroque way (not chronological, but ordered by colour and/or frame. The wall is full of paintings, not like the modern museums with 1 or max 3 paintings per wall).

The Accademia is world famous for Michelangelo’s statue of David and his unfinished sculptures of the Slaves for the tomb of Pope Julius II (see also Michelangelo tour and Michelangelo Highlights Tour)

Art of Charity Tour

Charity in medieval and Renaissance Florence was widely spread and practiced by every layer of the population.  Charity was not only a means to do good and to invoke God’s blessings, but expressed also very clearly social and humanistic views of the Florentine past.  In this tour our guide will show you some of the still existing and sometimes still functioning institutions of charity and explain you their role in Florentine culture.

In the tour we visit one of the oldest institutions of charity in Europe, the brotherhood of the Misericordia, founded in the 13th century. Afterwards we will head for the Oratorio dei Buonomini, founded in the 15th century, an institution which served to help and protect the so-called ‘shamefaced’: persons who ended up poor for various reasons and could not go (‘ashamed’ as they were) begging on the streets.

We can bring a visit to the Ospedale degli Innocenti, founded in the 15th century by the silk guild. It was an orphanage which was responsible for abandoned children in Florence for more than 500 years.
We can also visit the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, founded in the 13th century and the oldest still functioning hospital in the world.

  • Guided visit to the museum(s)/institutions indicated above. A combination with one of the other tours is possible.

Norie Lipmann, the initiator of Florentine Culture, studied art history in Amsterdam in the roaring nineties. She got her degree in 1997 and went to Florence to do research on early Renaissance art with scholarships granted her by the Dutch Institute of Art in Florence. Fallen in love with this beautiful city, she moved permanently to Florence and started to work as an official tourist guide. She continued to do research in different fields of art history of Renaissance Florence.

She says: "It is great to be able to combine the two different professions. As a tourist guide you have to know almost every aspect of the city, not only art, but also the Florentine gastronomy, the crafts, the fashion, the Florentine way of life. As an art historian you go much more into details. They can talk for hours on one painting, something which is during a tour mostly not requested. But that's the nice part. By knowing very specific backgrounds of Renaissance art, it is easier to explain it and in the same time it can be very enlightening for the persons who are interested. You have to love and understand Florentine culture to make other people love it too!"

Don't get lost in the beauty of Florence. Norie will guide you through the mazes of Florentine Culture!
